Movies have long had a rating system that is used as a guide to let parents and individuals know if a certain picture is appropriate for certain viewers. It is often to safeguard children and let parents know if a movie comprises violent or sexual scenes, however it may be rated for something as easy as smoking or swearing. Many people conflict with many ratings for many movies and there have even been copyright cases where a company knowingly removed scenes that they deemed inappropriate even though the picture may have been rated a PG or PG-13.
Since movies are all so different it is enormously arduous to preserve a standard that holds accurate for every solitary film. And then there are the different things that people find provocative. One person may consider that a solitary nude scene depicting probable sexuality is disgusting, while another may deem violence or a suicide by gunshot scene to be more offensive. Different people have diverse concerns when it comes to what they believe is suitable to see at a movie.
The rating system for movies nevertheless is based upon theme and content. Parents and individuals need to take responsibility themselves and just use the rating system as a guide as one should never rely on the rating system absolutely.
The G rating is fitting for General audiences, or generally everyone. There is not sexual or nude scenes, no swearing, drug or alcohol use, no cigarette smoking or violence.
PG means parent guidance is recommended. There may be short-lived moments of nudity or suggested sexuality. There may be smoking or swearing but none of these things are extreme. Parents are just cautioned that these short scenes may exist. PG-13 is a stronger PG warning, meant for a movie that is not bad enough to warrant an R rating but still not clean enough for a PG rating. These movies are in general not apt for children under 13. There is likely some nudity or suggested sexuality, or violence.
An R rating restricts anybody under 17 from the movie theater without the supervision of a parent or adult guardian. These movies often portray sexual scenes. There may also be drug abuse or extreme violent behavior. Parents are encouraged to watch these movies themselves before making any judgment to permit a young person to observe the movie.
There is a new rating that is NC-17. No one under the age of 17 will be admitted into the movie theater. This movie may not automatically be pornographic but it will have adult content, be it sexual, violent or other that makes it utterly unsuitable for a person less than 17 years of age.
As with most things a parent needs to make a mindful decision on what is or is not proper for their offspring. The ratings system is just a all-purpose guide.
