Hoop Dreams: Magnificent documentary follows 2 Chicago central-city kids (Arthur Agee and William Bars), who have fantasies of basketball stardom, over 4 years’ time. This quaint and immersing film plays like drama, not documentary, with the exception of that it takes spontaneous twists and turns no author might create. The film presents a scorching commentary on our school system, the indomitable power of the family, and the uncertainty of life. (109 minutes, 1994)
Hail Mafia: Somewhat fascinating melodrama in regards to employed killers going after a witness that has witnessed mob activities. Cast includes Henry Silva, Jack Klugman, Eddie Constantine, Elsa Martinelli, and Micheline Presle. (89 minutes, 1965)
Dracula’s Dog: Transylvanian vampire and bloodthirsty mutt, equipped with vampire like mannerisms by the original vampire, go to L.A to find Dracula’s last living successor. Cast includes Jose Ferrer, Michael Pataki, Reggie Nalder, Jan Shutan, Libbie Pursue, and John Levin. (90 minutes, 1978)
The Gorgeous Hussy: Megastars fill the cast in this fictionalized historical drama of Peggy O’Neal, President Andrew Jackson’s secret lover. The cast is beautifully costumed in well assigned settings. The movie is based on the novel by Samuel Hopkins Joyce. Cast includes Joan Crawford, Robert Taylor, Lionel Barrymore, Franchot Tone, Melvyn Douglas, James Stewart, Alison Skipworth, Beulah Bondi, and Gene Lockhart. (102 minutes, 1936)
Cry Freedom: An empathetic film in dealing with the life of South African activist Steve Biko (well played by Washington) and his kinship with crusading newspaper editor Donald Woods (Kline). Regrettably second half of film, minus the Biko personality, loses itself as it invests too much time on Kline and his families flee from South Africa. Cast includes Kevin Kline, Penelope Wilton, Denzel Washington, Kevin McNally, John Defrost, Timothy West, Juanita Waterman, John Hargreaves, Alec McCowen, Zakes Mokae, and Ian Richardson. (157 minutes, 1987)
Stage Door: Theatrical boarding home is setting for remarkable film, from an Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman play. Dynamite cast contains Hepburn as opulent gal trying to be successful on her own, Menjou as proposing creator, Leeds as allergic actress, and a few future stars such as Lucille Ball, Ann Miller, and Eve Arden. Cast includes Katharine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, Adolphe Menjou, Andrea Leeds, Gai Patrick, Constance Collier, Lucille Ball, Eve Arden, Ann Miller, Ralph Forbes, Franklin Pangborn, and Jack Carson. (90 minutes, 1937)
Strange Behavior: This shocker in regards to a grisly murder in a tiny midwestern town (shot in New Zealand!) got inexplicably excellent reviews in numerous places. You wonder what all the excitement was in reference to. Cast includes Michael Murphy, Louise Fletcher, Dan Shor, Fiona Lewis, Arthur Dignam, Scott Brady, and Charles Aisle. (98 minutes, 1981)
Lust for Life: This is a bright adaptation of Irving Rock’s biography of painter Van Gogh, vividly depicting his anguished life. Quinn captured a well-warranted ‘Oscar for his performance as painter-Guy Gauguin, in this attractive color production. Cast includes Kirk Douglas, Anthony Quinn, James Donald, Pamela Brown, Everett Sloane, Niall MacGinnis, Noel Purcell, Henry Daniell, Jill Bennett, Lionel Jeffries, and Eric Pohlmann. (122 minutes, 1956)
The Little Thief: So-so personality picture of the title lass, a disassociated, amoral adolescent floating though life in postwar France. If she comes off as a girl Antoine Doinel, it’s since the original tale was co written by Francois Truffuut, who was allegedly preparing to film this at the time of his demise. Cast includes Charlotte Gainsbourg, Didier Bezace, Simon de la Brosse, Nathalie Cardone, and Raoul Billerey. (104 minutes, 1989)
